The majestic and rich expanse of the natural beauty of Akan Mashu National Park greets you the moment you step out of the Lake Akan Onsen District. We invite you to fully enjoy this natural wonder to your heart's content. Summer offers nature hikes, canoeing, fishing and off-road cycling. Kushiro River Canoe Tour

The Kushiro River originates from Lake Kussharo and flows through the Kushiro wetlands before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. It has no dams due to a lack of elevation differences, making it a rarity among the first-class rivers of Japan. Traveling down the Kushiro River by canoe reveals hidden landscapes and scenery that cannot be seen from the viewing platforms or the boardwalks. Additionally, with proper safety precautions and protection against the cold, visitors can even experience canoeing in winter! Canoe leisurely downriver while enjoying up-close views of sparkling hoarfrost, passing wildlife and the flowing pancake ice.

LANDSCAPES

Enjoy Kushiro's natural beauty, such as its mountains and lakes, as they change from season to season.

Frost Flowers (Lake Akan)
A breathtaking view blooms on the lake surface

Frost flowers extend across the blue lake surface like a garden of glass sculptures. This contrast of interwoven blues and whites is a rare and beautiful sight created by nature. To see this breathtaking display, stay in Akan and participate in a local tour during the coldest part of the winter season between December and March.

Kushiro-Shitsugen National Park
Japan's largest wetlands spreading out to the north

The Kushiro wetlands formed naturally over the course of more than 6,000 years, and they are truly a place of wonders. Home to about 2,000 different species of precious plants and animals, including Japan's nationally protected red-crowned crane, the wetlands are an absolute treasure trove of nature. Sightseers can observe the wetlands by enjoying the views from the numerous viewing platforms located on high ground, taking to the boardwalk, or even canoeing downriver.

GOURMET

Exquisite! Information on Gourmet Cuisine in Kushiro

Dairy Farmer's Bar ROLL BALE
(Rakunoka Bar Roll Bale)
Raclette cheese produced by Eastern Hokkaido cheese makers is a popular choice!

Kushiro offers a variety of gourmet foods.
Fresh fish is, of course, a classic staple. However, we also highly recommend trying Kushiro's milk, cheeses and other dairy products!
Here, we will be introducing the "Dairy Farmer's Bar ROLL BALE."

While the streets of Kushiro are lined with fresh fish restaurants, ROLL BALE is a place where visitors can enjoy other East Hokkaido foods such as Hokkaido Wagyu Beef churrasco as well as pizzas and fondues made with generous amounts of unique Hokkaido cheeses.

In East Hokkaido, the sea fog carries minerals from the Pacific Ocean that encourage the growth of delicious pasture grass. Add clear, sunny weather that continues into the autumn, and East Hokkaido's cows can enjoy an abundance of nutrient-rich hay. The end results are delicious milk and cheeses.

Definitely a must-try! Come enjoy delicious East Hokkaido cheese raclette.

Washo Market (Washo Ichiba)
The choice is yours! Enjoy a bowl of rice topped with fresh market seafood

The "Washo Market" is the place to be if you want to casually enjoy a taste of Kushiro cuisine.
The Washo Market is known as one of the three main markets of Hokkaido, together with the Hakodate Morning Market and Sapporo's Nijo Market. The locals treat the Washo Market like their own kitchen.

If you eat only one thing at the Washo Market, make it "katte don." For this dish, you can select your favorite ingredients to build your own bowl of seafood over rice.
Small amounts of ingredients at a time or big, hearty servings of your favorites? The choice is yours!

This is a highly recommended, Kushiro-only destination where visitors can easily enjoy fresh marine produce.
For your next outing, why not take an early morning trip to the Washo Market?
