Established in 1975, Comic Market ("Comiket") is is the world's biggest comic market for self-published works. Held twice a year (summer and winter) at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center, Comic Market often reaches attendance figures of 500,000 visitors during the three-day event. In 2013, approximately 20,000 cosplayers, dressed up in elaborate costumes, also attended Comic Market, adding to the energetic atmosphere of the event. Many of the items sold at Comic Market are quite rare, as self-published comics are not often reprinted, and fans may be able to pick up a bargain. First-time visitors are recommended to arrive later in the day in order to avoid long lines.
