Tobe pottery is a type of pottery produced in Tobe-cho, Iyo-gun, Ehime Prefecture. There are approximately 100 kilns in the region, including Baizan kiln, the largest kiln producing Tobe pottery. The majority of Tobe pottery is tableware.
The feature of Tobe Pottery is its thickness and the gosu pigment which has been fired onto the surface of white porcelain. Tobe pottery is extremely popular in Japan as it is both handmade and hand-decorated, and are beautiful in design yet practical. Its reasonable price also makes Tobe pottery ideal as everyday tableware.
Tobe pottery is a designated traditional craft with a long history. In recent years, however, there has been a significant rise in the number of female and young potters with increasing examples of contemporary designs, which is only enhancing the attraction of Tobe pottery.
