Meiji-Jingu GaienTokyo

Autumn in Japan is a lovely period, and one place in Tokyo not to be missed is Meiji-Jingu Gaien, the park around the major tourist site of Meiji Shrine. The park has a wonderful approach, with an avenue of over 100 ginkgo trees. The leaves usually start changing color from mid-November to early December, and by early December the approach becomes a golden-yellow tunnel.
The Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Festival coincides with the autumn colors. The festival attracts large numbers of people, who are drawn to the fi ne food and attractive merchandise on sale. Visitors who prefer to avoid the crowds should go in the morning, when the sunshine and warm light create a lovely scene. It is very romantic and makes for stunning photos.
The first time I visited, I was impressed by the lively atmosphere and strong cultural underpinnings. Meiji-Jingu Gaien is popular among Japanese families: children love playing among the fallen yellow leaves. It is also popular with wedding couples and people who enjoy walking around in kimonos. Meiji-Jingu Gaien is a happy place and makes for a memorable experience.
