A drive befitting the southern land of Miyazaki. This spiritual route exemplifies the exotic scenery of Miyazaki, a land steeped in mythology. Experience the natural beauty and warm climate of Miyazaki to the fullest.
Aoshima Shrine(About 60 minutes required)
This shrine with a temperate feel stands on Aoshima, an island connected to the coast covered with subtropical forest. The bridge you cross to reach there offers stunning views of the deep blue sea, which sparkles majestically in the sunlight. Aoshima has a circumference of 1.5 km, and is surrounded by undulating rocks that are also known as the "Devil's Washboard." Both the rocks and plant life there are designated national natural monuments.
A myriad of good-luck charms are sold at Aoshima Shrine, which is well-known as a romantic spot. A palm tree charm would capture the subtropical mood and make a great souvenir.

Horikiri Pass(About 15 minutes required)
After passing along a mountain road, you'll be confronted with the azure magnificence of the Pacific Ocean. This is one of the most scenic spots on the Nichinan-kaigan coast, and the contrast between the Phoenix palms lining the road and the endless blue ocean makes this a sight to behold. You can also enjoy viewing the different flowers planted along the pass in each season. A stop at Roadside Station Phoenix comes highly recommended.
I recommend you try the popular soft-serve ice cream at Roadside Station Phoenix. I'd have to say my favorite flavor is Miyazaki's famous mango.
Seeing the morning sun from Horikiri Pass is another highlight. It's so popular that even locals get up early to go and take photos there.

Daemon De Marche (Lunch)(About 60 minutes required)
Further south along the beautiful Nichinan-kaigan coast is "Daemon De Marche." This food complex has an all-you-can-eat restaurant featuring fresh fish and local ingredients on the first floor, while the second floor houses a cafe and restaurant where you can dine while enjoying a breathtaking views of the sea. If the weather is fine, the terrace seating outside the first floor is another great option.
The store there sells a range of Miyazaki souvenirs, shochu, sundries and confectionary, as well as homemade bread from the on-site bakery.
A large selection of souvenirs are available, and this is also a great spot to look out at the sea while eating freshly-baked bread, take commemorative photos, or enjoy a break from driving.

Sun Messe Nichinan(About 90 minutes required)
Sun Messe Nichinan is a popular attraction in Miyazaki symbolized by its seven moai, which are the world's only full reproductions created with permission from Easter Island.
On a sunny hill there you'll also find a geoglyph of a butterfly!
The grounds feature an observation deck, an insects of the world exhibit, a restaurant, and a store. Seeing the horizon stretching out before you here makes you realize how vast the planet really is.
Sun Messe Nichinan is situated on a small hill along the Nichinan-kaigan coast. It is said that touching the second moai from the right will give you luck in finance, while touching the third moai from the left will give you luck in love.
20 min.
Udo Shrine(About 60 minutes required)
The main shrine is inside a large cave, which is reached by walking along an approach that hugs the coastal bluff and descending some stairs. You can enter the cave, which has a pure and mystical atmosphere, and walk the circumference of the main shrine. At the foot of the cliff in front of the main shrine is a large rock shaped like a turtle. Try throwing five "lucky balls" one at a time at the depression on this rock, which is known as "Turtle Rock," while making a wish. If one of them goes into the depression, it is said your wish will come true.
While making a wish, throw the "lucky balls" at Turtle Rock with your right hand if you are a woman, or your left hand if you are a man. If one goes in, it is said your wish will come true.
Udo Shrine is reputed to be beneficial for marriage, harmony between married couples, pregnancy, and childbirth. Deep within the shrine pavilion is Ochichi-iwa, a rock that visitors hoping to receive a blessing go to touch.

Umagase (Hyuga)(About 45 minutes required)
After traveling along a forest boardwalk, you will get a glimpse of the sea at the foot of a precipitous cliff, which features 70 meter high columns of rock carved out by the raging waves of the Pacific Ocean. Walking further, a promontory called "Umagase" that juts out into the open sea will come into sight. After continuing your journey to Umagase while gazing at the vast Pacific Ocean, you will witness spectacular views of the deep blue sea with the endless horizon stretching before you.
The name "Umagase," meaning "horseback," was given to this place because the rocks there resemble the chestnut color and narrowly-arched shape of a horse's back. The superb vista of the great Pacific Ocean from atop sheer cliffs is something you can only experience here.
45 min.
Tsuno Winery(About 60 minutes required)
This hilltop winery offers views of the town and sea. Tsuno Wine, which is made with locally-grown grapes, has won praise from around the world. You can take a tour of the vinification process, do some wine tasting, and also purchase wine for yourself. At the on-site cafe, you can enjoy a meal while looking out at picturesque scenery.
Tsuno Winery, which is set in a secluded spot overlooking the town of Tsuno, makes delicious wine using select local ingredients. You can sample a Chardonnay or Campbell Early while enjoying some downtime. There is also an extensive range of wine that would make a great souvenir.

Aeon Mall Miyazaki(About 90 minutes required)
This is a large shopping center featuring around 170 specialist stores that sell everything from fashion, food, and sundries to amusements. There is also a general supermarket. It is in a great location around 10 minutes by car from central Miyazaki, and is equipped with 4,000 parking spaces.
