Nabana no Sato
Izumo Grand Shrine in Shimane Prefecture is a famous Shinto shrine dedicated to relationships
and marriage and one of the most ancient and important shrines in Japan. In
October, it is believed that all 8 million deities from all over the country gather at Izumo
Grand Shrine to hold a meeting. At that time, many visitors also come to worship during
a period of strong spiritual power.
I was very impressed by the peaceful surroundings of the first giant torii gate of the shrine with beautiful mountain scenery in the background. The prayer hall has a gigantic sacred straw rope (shimenawa) hanging in front of the building. The main hall is 24 meters high and the tallest shrine building in Japan. It is a great spot for taking photos. At this shrine, you clap your hands four times before praying — unlike the two times elsewhere.
After visiting Izumo Grand Shrine, you can have a look around the many souvenir shops and restaurants in the area. While in Izumo, visitors should certainly try the famous dish of buckwheat noodles called Izumo soba.
